Mrs. Nita Osborne was 87 years young when the Lord called her to her Heavenly Home on January 17, 2025. She was born on August 20, 1937 in Tallassee, Alabama.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm with funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm, Friday, January 24, 2025 at Linville Memorial Funeral Home. Rev. Rick Dorley will be officiating. Burial will follow in Carrville Cemetery.
She was wife of 66 years, and a mother to 2 sons, Jackie Osborne (Gaynell) and Mike Osborne; and 1 daughter, Joy Melton (Chris). She was grandmother to Johnny Osborne (Debbie), Patrick Osborne (Tara), Don Osborne, Shae Osborne (Brittany), Traci Faulk (fiancé Anthony Teal), Autumn Melton (fiancé Chase Trussell) and Braden Melton. She also had several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by brothers, Ralph Carswell (Francis) and Roy Carswell (Sandra).
She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Osborne; baby, Johnny Dale Osborne; parents, Royal Espy Carswell and Essie Vera Bateman Carswell; brothers and sisters, Carl Carswell, James Carswell, Earldeen Carswell, Jeanette Rosson, Dorothy Bowdoin and Ronald Carswell.
If you knew Nita, you would describe her as having a strong will, unwavering determination, unmatched work ethic, and fierce love and support for her family and friends. She was independent, and very opinionated. She would tell what she thought even if you didn't want to hear it but sometimes you needed to hear it. Nita lived a very full and active life. She loved playing softball and tennis in her younger years. She loved traveling, particularly to visit family members, and never passed up an opportunity to go treasure hunting at a good "junk store" (aka antique shop). She was a lifelong Alabama football fan and was the #1 fan of all activities and sports her grand and great-grandchildren participated in. Nita was a very, very good cook. She always said she had been cooking since she was 9 years old, along with sisters to feed the 11 members of her family, 8 brothers and sisters, along with her parents. She was known far and wide for her famous biscuits and taught many others the art of making her light and fluffy, mouthwatering biscuits from scratch. There was rarely a day that went by without a batch baking in the oven or left overs that were left in the microwave that at any given time one of her children, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, grand or great-grandchildren wouldn't go to visit and not have one of these famous biscuits to eat. They were known as "cookies" to some, but even though she taught many, her children know they could never taste a biscuit as good as their mothers. She could whip together a delicious feast in no time and found great joy in feeding family and friends. There were countless times over the years that someone would come over and visit and they would talk, laugh and discuss lots of things over a pot, or two of coffee.
After retiring from Schlumberger/Neptune Water Meter Company, a place Nita said she loved to work, one of her favorite activities was teaching her grand and great-grandchildren and friends of the grandchildren to swim in her swimming pool. She loved to read and she would read numerous books a week. She enjoyed feeding and watching hummingbirds and people walking around the neighborhood. She attracted more hummingbirds to her porch than most people have ever seen in one place. As with all other things Nita added her special dose of love in caring for these tiny creatures and it was truly something spectacular to witness. She also really enjoyed the gatherings with the ladies from Westside Baptist Church for their monthly ladies circle meetings. Most importantly she loved God and knew that she was washed in the blood of the Lamb and would hear the words, "Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant", once entering the gates of Heaven to meet her Savior, Jesus Christ.
She is finally reunited in Heaven with her husband, father, grand and great-grandfather, who she spent most of her life married to. She will never be forgotten and she leaves an empty hole in many hearts, especially her children's. The stories that she shared with everyone about her family taught us how truly close that her and her siblings were. With those memories, the legacy of Nita Osborne, Our Mother, has shown us how important family really is. The hardest thing for us, her children, is saying Goodbye, in our eyes to the greatest mom that we could ever have been blessed with. She filled our hearts with happiness and joy beyond measure. Until God calls us home, we will have to live our lives without her, but we must remember to cherish the time that we have with family that is still with us until we all meet again.
